General Manager

Overview:

Department : Applied Energy

The purpose of the position:

The purpose of this position is to lead and manage SANEDI’s strategic applied energy and innovation, and create a pipeline for applied energy and innovation programmes/technologies. Provide thought leadership and create an enabling environment for applied energy and innovation in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • An engineer, preferably with a PhD,
  • A background of working with electricity grids,
  • At least 5 years’ experience working within a research environment and operating at an executive management level , 3 years being part of an executive team reporting to the Board
  • Must be able to demonstrate understanding of the Smart cities, Smart grids technologies, 4IR and digitalisation of electricity systems.
  • In depth understanding of municipal energy environment (legal frameworks, infrastructure, systems and processes).
  • Experience in the National Research System, applied energy and/or innovation/Applied Energy, Smart Grids, Cleaner Mobility, Hydrogen,Energy Secretariat (alternative energy, excluding nuclear)
  • Strong financial acumen, the ability to drive strategic development and improving operational performance; and
  • Unquestionable integrity with the ability to inspire confidence and develop excellence

Qualifications

  • A university degree (Masters, or academic equivalent) in management, administration, engineering, energy, economics, marketing, project management or another field with direct relevance to the project.

Experience

  • At least 5 years of experience in managing large-scale projects on climate change mitigation, energy efficiency, or renewable energy
  • At least 5 years of demonstrable project/programme management experience.
  • Demonstrable experience with GEF funded projects is required.
  • At least 5 years of experience working with ministries, national or provincial institutions with relevance to the project.
  • Strong leadership, managerial and coordination skills, with a demonstrated ability to effectively coordinate the implementation of large multi-stakeholder projects, including financial and technical aspects.
  • Ability to effectively manage technical and administrative teams, work with a wide range of stakeholders across various sectors and at all levels, to develop durable partnerships with collaborating agencies.
  • Ability to administer budgets, train and work effectively with counterpart staff at all levels and with all groups involved in the project.
  • Ability to coordinate and supervise multiple Project Implementation Units in their implementation of technical activities in partnership with a variety of subnational stakeholder groups, including community and government.
  • Strong drafting, presentation and reporting skills.

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Positions In Fort Hare Institute of Technology

Overview:

Postdoctoral fellowship SET - (2 positions) This role is aimed at advancing knowledge of various photovoltaic cell technologies. The research fellowship in this group is focused on development and characterization of perovskite solar cells. The key performance areas include:

Postdoctoral fellowship SES - ( 1 position)

This role is aimed at enhancing energy efficiency through smart energy systems and renewable energy sources application. The research fellowship in this group is focused on modelling and analysis of renewable energy systems (particularly solar photovoltaics) towards development of smart building and cities. The key performance areas include:

  • Develop model for solar PV system energy yield forecasting and bankability.
  • In-depth analysis of data that are currently being updated by our existing solar PV systems.
  • Develop model for energy efficiency in hybrid renewable energy application for residential building application.
  • Develop model for solar PV degradation and fault prediction via machine learning procedures

his role is aimed at research into Biomaterials processes and applications. The research fellow would conduct research in the areas of biomass gasification processing and biogas digester processing. The key performance areas include:

  • In-depth research in the area of biorefinery, fermentation technology and microbial process development.

Invitation for applications to serve on the audit committee for the South African National Energy Development Institute

Overview:

The South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) was established in 2011 under the National Energy Act, 2008 (Act No. 34 of 2008). The Act provides for SANEDI to direct, monitor, and conduct energy research and development, promote energy research and technology innovation, and undertake measures to promote energy efficiency throughout the economy.
SANEDI invites applications from suitably qualified persons to serve as members of its Audit and Risk Committee. Two (2) Audit Committee members are required.

Responsibilities:

The Audit Committee is an advisory committee charged with fulfilling oversight responsibilities with regard to internal control, risk management and governance processes. Regulating and discharging the responsibilities as contained in the Audit Committee Charter. The Audit Committee will meet at least four times per year, and special meetings may be held.

Requirements:

A relevant degree or equivalent qualification in Accounting, Risk Management, Legal or Auditing. Proven expertise and experience in the fields of financial management, risk management, performance management and internal auditing is a prerequisite. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written). Knowledge of PFMA, Treasury Regulations, GRAP Standards and any other legislation governing the public sector will serve as an added advantage.

Experience:

A minimum of ten (10) years’ senior management experience in Risk, Audit, Accounting, Governance, Information Technology, Law. At least three (3) years experience in the Public Sector. Preference will be given to applicants with experience serving on Audit Committees of Government Departments, Public Entities.

Competencies and Attributes:

Analytical reasoning abilities. Excellent communication skills (verbal and written), Interpersonal relations, Knowledge and understanding of the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), Treasury Regulations, and other relevant legislation/policies, e.g. GRAP, GAAP and National Treasury, and practice notes, Knowledge and understanding of the roles of Internal and External Auditors, and understanding the Public Service Regulations framework.

Term of appointment:

The successful candidates will be appointed for an initial contract period of 1 year.

Remuneration:

Members will be remunerated per meeting for preparation and attendance in terms prescribed by the National Treasury annual approved rates.

    Graduate Internship: Monitoring and Evaluation of Energy Efficiency

    Overview:

    Department : GIZ Programme: Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings and Infrastructure Programme (EEPBIP), support to SANEDI

    PROJECT BACKGROUND:

    The Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings and Infrastructure Programme (EEPBIP) aims to employ a South African graduate for the purpose of an internship. The EEPBIP, funded by the NAMA Facility, supports the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) in scaling-up energy efficiency projects in public sector institutions.

    The Job description below is for an intern to be employed to support SANEDI in their activities in the establishment of a Monitoring and Evaluation system for energy efficiency project identification for municipalities, provinces, national government and State-Owned Entities. The position will in principle be based at the SANEDI offices in Sandton, Johannesburg; however, during COVID restrictions, this position will require remote working.

    Responsibilities

    The intern will be be providing technical support in the development of a Monitoring and Evaluation System for public sector energy efficiency projects - their tasks will therefore comprise support to following activities, but not limited to:

    • Support the establishment of data collection and analysis processes, and data integrity requirements, including the development and review of data templates;
    • Data collection and formatting of primary data from energy efficiency projects;
    • Support the establishment of operational processes for data transfer to other key departments (DEFF, DPME etc);
    • Support in the finalisation of Terms of Reference for the procurement of a Monitoring and Evaluation System and support the appointed service provider in the development of the System;
    • Preparation of briefing reports on Monitoring and Evaluation of public sector energy efficiency;Preparation of briefing reports on Monitoring and Evaluation of public sector energy efficiency;
    • Conducting and supporting research activities as and when required on technical projects and data support.
