This December has seen the government place a stronger emphasis on health and safety. While focus in 2020 has of course been on the mitigation of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) is reminding the country of its efforts towards a Zero Harm minerals and energy sector, by partnering with the Mine Health and Safety Council (MHSC) for a month-long health and safety campaign. The campaign aims to create awareness, promote health and safety, and communicate safety tips. It has also created a platform for all stakeholders, government, business, labour and the public to engage on health and safety issues that will assist the minerals and energy sector to achieve the slogan of Zero Harm.

Efforts to bring relief to South Africa’s mining communities amid the turbulence of 2020 are bearing fruit for 200 families in large mining communities. The year is drawing to a close on a positive note as these communities received safer, more sustainable, and more cost-effective cooking solutions to see them through the coming months. The South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) together with the Mineworkers Development Agency (MDA) handed over the first batch of 200 liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stove systems to families in Virginia in the Free State, and Orkney in the North West Province on the 14th and 15th of December, respectively.

Household appliances are responsible for a significant percentage of residential power usage, and as South Africa is still heavily reliant on coal-fired power stations, this usage results in increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In a bid to combat this, the ‘Energy Efficiency Standards and Labelling’ Programme places energy labels on appliances that provide consumers with accurate and comparable information on their energy efficiency performance.

It is widely reported that South Africa is a country well-suited to renewable energy development, as seen from the successful Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REI4P). The greatest potential exists in solar energy development thanks to the country’s sunny geography, however, clean energy possibilities exist across many energy technologies. The South African National Energy Development Institute, along with stakeholders, recently hosted an energy sector meeting between Czechia and South Africa to discuss industry collaboration and opportunities in the energy sector.

South Africa’s efforts to further develop its energy efficiency market have received a boost
with a US$305 000 World Bank grant towards developing a study on sustainable financial
mechanisms for demand-side energy efficiency market. The beneficiaries of the study – the
South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) and the Department of
Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) – will use it to identify and develop appropriate
financing mechanisms and associated institutional structures for implementing energy
efficiency measures at scale, focusing on the public, agriculture and industrial sectors

The South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) is rolling out 26 000 m2 of
cool roofing technology in the City of Cape Town as part of the Cool Roofs and Insulation
Collaboration. The purpose of the roll out is to show the power of passive cooling when cool
coatings are used in conjunction with insulation.

The South African National Energy Development Institute has long been host to a successful
and lesser-known initiative that seeks to see South Africa’s carbon footprint minimised
through the capture and storage of carbon dioxide emissions. Through the South African
Centre for Carbon Capture and Storage (SACCCS), SANEDI has been supporting the country’s
efforts to be more environmentally responsible. In a new development, considering the
geological aspects involved in this climate change solution, the SACCCS has been transferred
to the Council for Geoscience (CGS), which is sure to see further success of this initiative in
the country.

Cool road surfacing can combat rising temperatures due to “urban heat islands” and spur the
economy. That’s the view of South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI)
as the country marks Transport month. In urban areas especially, cities are as much as 2
degrees Celsius warmer than their rural surroundings – creating “urban heat islands” (UHIs).
SANEDI believes a simple solution to combatting this heat lies in something inherent to all
cities – the extensive road networks.

Energy efficiency practices have far-reaching financial benefits for the underprivileged as
these provide daily cost savings, especially at a time when the global economy is under
pressure. The South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) believes
people need to be fully informed, to understand the importance of sustainable energy
practices in order to benefit from the associated savings.

While South Africans celebrate the lifting of many Covid-19 restrictions and the full reopening of the economy, the news is not all good as Eskom has reported a severely constrained power system, resulting in continued load shedding. This latest round of load shedding comes as ten generation units at seven power stations have suffered breakdowns in the last 48 hours. “These power interruptions are inconvenient, but they come at a massive cost to the economy,” explains Barry Bredenkamp, General Manager Energy Efficiency & Corporate Communications at the South African National Energy Development Institute, (SANEDI).

Amid national energy constraints and a mining sector set to contract, opportunity exists for South Africa’s mining sector to continue exploring cost-saving measures with improved energy efficiency. With mine production in the country having plummeted in April and May due to lockdown restrictions and a near total industry shutdown, boosted efforts to save energy and costs can improve the sustainability of this sector, which accounts for 8% of the country’s GDP.

South Africans can keep warmer, save money, and take pressure off the national grid by implementing simple low-cost energy saving measures. This call from Barry Bredenkamp, General Manager Energy Efficiency & Corporate Communications at SANEDI, (The South African National Energy Development Institute).
“While South Africa has passed the winter equinox, meaning our days are getting longer again, this doesn’t necessarily mean they are getting warmer just yet. In fact, we can still expect several cold fronts to come knocking, with some of the country’s coldest days expected in July and August,” explains Bredenkamp.
