SANEDI Appointed as the Energy Transitions Working Group

The South African National Energy Development Institute (SANEDI) is proud to announce its appointment as the Secretariat for the Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) under South Africa’s G20 Presidency in 2025.

This appointment recognizes SANEDI’s expertise in energy research, innovation, and policy coordination as it takes on a central role in facilitating South Africa’s leadership in global energy transition discussions.

About the ETWG and South Africa’s G20 Presidency

The G20 Energy Transitions Working Group (ETWG) plays a critical role in shaping international cooperation on energy security, sustainability, and affordability. Under South Africa’s G20 Presidency, the ETWG will focus on three key priorities:

  1. Energy Security, Affordable and Reliable Access – this priority aims to enhance global energy security by diversifying energy sources, improving infrastructure resilience, and expanding access to clean cooking solutions.
  2. Just, Affordable, and Inclusive Energy Transitions – this priority focuses on promoting industrialization, socio-economic safeguards, workforce reskilling, and green hydrogen adoption in hard-to-abate sectors.
  3. African Interconnectivity and Energy Pool – this priority seeks to advance regional energy cooperation through cross-border infrastructure, policy harmonization, and renewable energy corridors.

SANEDI’s Role as the ETWG Secretariat

As the ETWG Secretariat, SANEDI will be responsible for:

  • Facilitating multi-stakeholder engagements to ensure effective collaboration between government entities, state-owned enterprises, private sector partners, research institutions, and international organizations.
  • Coordinating ETWG activities to support South Africa’s strategic leadership in shaping G20 energy policies.
  • Providing technical and administrative support to ensure alignment between South Africa’s energy transition goals and global best practices.
  • Monitoring and reporting on key developments and progress across all priority areas.

Engaging with the G20 Energy Agenda

SANEDI is committed to driving energy innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity as part of South Africa’s G20 agenda. Through its role as the ETWG Secretariat, SANEDI will contribute to advancing clean energy solutions, fostering African regional cooperation, and ensuring a just and balance transition for all.
